Hands-On with the horse at the Unit Open House
The Los Angeles Mounted Police Foundation (LAMP) purchases horses and equipment for the Los Angeles Mounted Police Platoon (Metropolitan Division E-Platoon) and supports the unit’s operations, public relations programs, and officer morale.

The Platoon employs around 40 horses. Some really sturdy horses stay with the Platoon for ten to twelve years.  Others retire sooner.  When they retire, the horses must be replaced, at a cost of $5,000 to $8,000 per horse, and a suitable home must be found for the retiree. The City of Los Angeles pays the police officers, their training and deployment costs, the staff, veterinary, and feeding cost of the horses, and facility maintenance expense. But the City does not pay for replacement horses or for replacement equipment for the horse.  This is what LAMP does. Last year (2009) LAMP purchased or replaced three horses for the unit.

LAMP also sponsors the unit’s public Open House and “Ride Along” events. These events allow the public to visit and interact with the horses and officers, and to see how the Los Angeles Mounted Police Platoon operates. The events are a vital link between the unit and the community they serve.

In past years LAMP has contributed funds for a new exercise room for the officers, a cover for the round exercise pen to enable it to be used year round, and a new reflective roof coating for the barn, which made it much more comfortable in summer.

In addition to our annual events during the coming year LAMP will:

  • Purchase two to three horses for the unit (and find retirement homes for a similar number),
  • Pay for much needed repairs to the barn and training facilities, and
  • Start a five year program to replace all the unit’s saddles and pads.
